LexisNexis checks the citations in a brief in four places: Brief Analysis on Lexis+, Shepard's BriefCheck, Shepard's Verify in Lexis+ with Protégé, and Lexis Create+ inside Word. Shepard's sits under all four. Each row below comes from LexisNexis' own pages, next to what proofread.law does and how often it is wrong. All cite checkers compared.
Shepard's Verify is the newest of the four. It flags citations that cannot be verified as existing and adds Shepard's signals, one document at a time. Whether it also checks that the case supports your sentence depends on which LexisNexis page you read: the press release of 2026-10-27 says yes, the research tip of 2026-10-29 says a verified citation "does not establish" it. Our deep check answers that question, with the passage shown.
Brief Analysis and BriefCheck pull the citations out of your brief, show Shepard's treatment and mark citations they cannot match as Unverified; BriefCheck's QuoteCheck checks quotations. Neither publishes an error rate. Paste the same draft here for a second check whose rates are published.
Lexis Create+ is the Microsoft 365 add-in: Bluebook formatting, quote verification and Shepard's inside the document. Ours gives you a .docx back with a comment on every flagged citation, and checks support, which Create+'s page does not claim.
LexisNexis prices by quote. If you need "are these cases real, did I quote them right, do they say what I cite them for" before filing, our free tier checks 20 drafts a month without an account, and Solo is $29 a month. You do not get Shepard's; see the next card.
That is Shepard's job, and all four Lexis tools show it. We do not answer it for US cases. For Swiss decisions we flag a later leading case that changed or clarified the practice, which is a narrower check.
A citation like 2023 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 12345 points into LexisNexis' own database. Lexis resolves it; we cannot, and list it as "cannot verify", never as wrong. In the briefs we measured, about a quarter of citations were Westlaw or Lexis identifiers.
| tool | case exists | quotation | says what you cite it for | still good law | error rate published | your document kept | price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| proofread.law | yes, measured | yes | yes, opt-in deep check | no (Swiss: changes of practice) | yes | no, unless you save it | free for 20 checks a month, then $0.50 a check or $29 a month |
| Shepard's Verify (Lexis+ with Protégé) | yes | press release yes, help page no | press release yes, help page no | Shepard's | no | uploads outside a Vault purged at the end of the session; not used for training | by quote |
| Brief Analysis (Lexis+) | yes, "Unverified" signal | yes | not stated | Shepard's | no | full text not stored beyond the session | with Lexis+, by quote |
| Shepard's BriefCheck | yes | yes, QuoteCheck | not claimed | Shepard's | no | not stated | not shown online |
| Lexis Create+ (Word add-in) | yes, via Shepard's | yes, quote verification | not stated | Shepard's | no | not used for training; retention period not stated | not shown online |
"Not stated": LexisNexis' pages do not say. "Yes" for LexisNexis is its own claim. Ours is measured: 89% of invented cases caught, 1.2% false flags; at the confidence the report shows, the deep check confirms 55.0% of good citations and marks a wrong passage as support for 4.5% of wrong pairs, which is why it is a review queue and not a verdict. Every number, with its sample and caveats.
If you already pay for Lexis, run its check first: it carries Shepard's and resolves LEXIS citations, and we do neither for US law. What none of the four publishes is how often it misses an invented case or flags a real one, and LexisNexis' own pages disagree about whether Verify checks support. Ours publishes its rates and is free to try without an account, which makes it a cheap second check before filing. If you do not pay for Lexis, ours covers existence, quotation and support for a fraction of the price, and you check good law separately.
What each page says, quoted, and when we read it. If a page changes, tell us at hello@proofread.law and the row changes.

The product page describes it as a way to "review briefs, check citations, and surface key authorities". A LexisNexis research tip: results are shown "along with the Shepard's treatment", and "the pink Unverified signal… could be because… there is an error in the citation."
